Sukalpa Dhar, Kolkata: Breath is life. Breath is truth. Breath is beautiful. Breath is reality. Breath is the true essence of life. There is no life without breath. Breathing is a continuous process.
Persons who have good and healthy lungs can carry maximum amount of oxygen to the heart. One’s breath is with him or her since his or her birth and will end up with his or her life. Breathing is nothing but inhaling oxygen from the atmosphere and exhaling the oxygen, turning it into carbondioxide, again in the surrounding atmosphere. This is called breathing. Breathing and respiration are two different things, but are interrelated body processes, which help the body organs to function properly.
Breathing is the physical process of inhaling and exhaling gases while respiration is the chemical process which takes place at the cells and creates energy.
Breath is one’s own treasure. This is synonymous to knowledge. No one can steal away one’s breath and knowledge. Always respect your breath. Nothing can be done without breath. No breath is equals to no life. Breath is God. Players in the field breathe continuously and steadily. There are 4 types of breathing. They are: (i) Clavicular (shoulder) (ii) Costal (chest) (iii) Diaphragmatic and (iv) Abdominal. Clavicular breathing is useful while singing very shrill musical notes.
Costal breathing is useful for singing high-pitched notes. Diaphragmatic breathing is useful for all singers. When a singer cultivates these types of breathing habits then coming out of unnecessary scattered musical notes can easily be shunned away. Practicing abdominal breathing helps to reach the lower notes steadily and effectively.
During high intensity running runners breathe through their mouth. It is more effective. It allows more amount of oxygen to enter their body and fuels their muscles. Deep breathing reduces anxiety, stress and pressure. By controlling the breath a person can achieve any heights. Breath is an essential factor for swimmers, weight lifters, football players, cricket players, poem reciters, singers, etc. While speaking also breath plays a vital role.
The one who has learnt the art to control one’s breath is the king of the world. He or she can achieve any heights in any sector of life, especially in performing arts. For the singers, the swimmers, the dancers, the stunt man, etc, it is very important to know the art and science of controlling their breath.
The one who has a longer breath has the capacity to excel in any work one does. He or she has the endurance and stamina to act, study, play, sing, talk, dance or swim etc, for long hours. The earth is the only planet where we can breath so it is so special. To improve the quality of your lungs always breath in fresh and purified oxygen which are released from the plants during the day time. Never sleep under a tree during the evening or night hours because at that time the plants release carbondioxide.
Breathing plays an essential role to become a good singer.
First of all while practicing singing our mind, soul and voice should be fresh and sound. One should have mens sana in corpore sano while one sits for his or her’s riyaz. We should always sit straight and never tilt up or tilt down our face too much. We must keep it straight. We should never stoop. We have to practice the lower notes more and more.
These can improve the quality of one’s voice and make it steady. Even if one is not a singer it can tone up one’s voice and make his or her voice an appealing one. One should avoid shouting in a loud volume. Each of us should try to protect our voice. It is very precious. We should never impersonate anyone else’s voice while singing because it puts tremendous pressure in our vocal cords and in due course of time it can also damage our vocal cords severely. We should always use our own voice while singing.
The voice in which one speaks normally is one’s own voice. Voice culture methodology is necessary to train and control the voice to sing effectively. It helps to stabilise the voice. Voice culture is a method of training the voice so that it can be projected effectively with the help of voice modulation, breath control techniques and effective pronunciation.
While doing our riyaz we can use our tanpura. First of all one should take a deep breath with one’s nose and try to inhale as much oxygen as one can and when one’s lungs are full with air then he or she should stop and shouldn’t let the air breath out. We should keep our chest expanded. We should try to increase the time span of our expanded chest. Then slowly exhale the air through the nose.
While we inhale the normal and natural tendency is the stomach moves up or comes outward and while exhaling it goes down or moves inwards. This is the right and correct natural technique to breath. One should try to reduce the rate of speed of releasing the carbondioxide while breathing out or exhaling.
This will automatically improve the power of your lungs. It will add up freshness to your body. One should practice the word and sound of ‘Om’ every morning and each time the sound should come from your navel. One should always elongate one’s ‘Om’ as long as one can. Never put too much pressure in your vocal cord because if it gets damaged by any chance it will never recover.
This will be a great loss for a life time. So always protect your voice. It’s very precious. It’s very beautiful. One can buy a new musical instrument by throwing away the earlier one but one can never ever exchange or change one’s voice. It is God gifted and unique. It doesn’t matter whether the quality of a voice is good or bad. The voice which one uses to speak or sing is unique. A voice is an identity. If one trains it properly it can do wonders. It can resonate.
It can create various patterns and paint different scenery and subsequently it can weave a story in the air with the help of various musical notes which are invisible through naked eyes but are clearly visible through our mind’s eyes. If one tries to see them then they can surely be visible. It can connect hearts. It can create strong bondings. It can connect souls. Each time when one is hitting a perfect musical note while singing or playing a musical instrument is reaching God through his or her’s music.
Hitting a perfect musical note with correct pitching is a sheer bliss. The famous Indian lyricist, poet, author, screen writer and film director, Mr. Sampooran Singh Kalra popularly known as Gulzar or Gulzar Saab wrote ‘Naam Gum Jayega, Chehera Ye Badal Jayega, Meri Aawaz Hi Pehchan Hai, Gar Yaad Rahe’. This means my name will be lost, my face will change, my voice is my identity, if you remember it. So, one should never demean one’s breath. Breath is power. Breath is nothing but perseverance to reach the almighty God.
