Guwahati News Desk: The Assam government is mulling to introduce a bill over mob lynching, said Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on Monday.
While replying to the issue of bringing in legislation to stop mob lynching incidents in the Assembly, Hazarika asserted that so far no steps have been taken in this regard, however, the government is mulling to introduce at the earliest.
“So far, we have not enacted any law against mob lynching but we must take steps to prevent it. Many such gruesome incidents have shaken us,” he added.
He further said that the government will discuss and consider the acts implemented by other states and added that the government does not have any information about laws that other states have enacted.
Hazarika, further while giving a reference of the Supreme Court (SC) judgment in the Tehseen Poonawalla case, which had issued a set of guidelines to stop mob lynching incidents, he said that there seemed to be a scope of enacting anti-mob lynching laws.
Notably, there have been several instances of mob lynching in Assam during the past few years.
