Guwahati News Desk: In the Assam cabinet meeting the State officials have decided to rename the existing Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park.
According to the sources, earlier Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting with the representatives of the Adivasi and tea tribe communities who requested the Assam CM to dedicate the existing national park to honour the Adivasi and tea tribes communities.
The State government has renamed Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park by taking the demand of the Adivasi and tea tribe.
The Rajiv Gandhi National Park currently known as Orang National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1985 covering an area of 79.28 sq km. Later in the year 1999, the wildlife sanctuary was declared as a national park.
Orang National Park is situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Darrang and Sonitpur district and the national park is famous for Royal Bengal Tiger, one-horn rhino, Pygmy Hog, and wild elephants.
