Guwahati News Desk: Due to the Thai government’s failure to handle coronavirus outbreaks and its impact on the economy, more than a thousand Thai anti-government protesters clashed with police in Bangkok on Saturday.
The protesters marched towards the office of the Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, demanding the leader’s resignation.
Meanwhile, the police sealed off a road near Victory Monument in the Thai capital using containers and fired teargas and rubber bullets to force protesters back.
Nearly 100 officers were seen in riot gears and shields metres away from where demonstrators had gathered. The Thai police were seen firing tear gas and rubber bullets to repel the crowd of several hundred young anti-Government protesters.
The rally was led by the Free Youth, a student protest group and the demonstrators were seen throwing rocks, bottles, fireworks and firing slingshots, during the hours-long confrontation in the Din Daeng area of Bangkok, which was obscured by swirling smoke.
According to the city’s Erawan Medical Center emergency services, five people were hospitalised, including three police officers. The march was called off in the early evening but disturbances continued, with protesters battling the police and hurling objects.
Moreover, street protests against the government have been held in the recent weeks by several groups, including Prayuth’s former political allies, as frustrations mount over its management of coronavirus outbreaks and the damage pandemic measures have inflicted on the economy.
