Guwahati News Desk: The Guwahati Traffic police, ahead of Christmas and New Year, has intensified its drive against drunk driving in the city. The traffic police have been conducting breath analyzing tests to detect drunk drivers in the city. As many as 26 people were intercepted for drunk driving in the city on the night of December 22. Their licenses were suspended and fines of Rs 10,000 were imposed on them.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic, Hiranya Kumar Barman said, “Police stations across Guwahati are on high alert this festive season. The drive is intended to reduce accidents during the New Year’s festivities.We are trying our best to stop drinking and driving as the drivers not only endanger themselves but others as well.”
“Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had warned of stringent action on drunk driving on the eve of New Year. He had warned that all offenders will be detained and had directed the district transport department to act tough on violators”, he added.
The Guwahati Police took to their official Twitter handle to inform the masses about this latest development. “Drive Against Drunken Driving Yesterday night 26 people were intercepted for drunk driving. Their licences are being suspended & a Fine of ₹10,000/- being imposed on them,” the Guwahati Police tweeted.
Such aggressive drive by the city police will continue to remain active during Christmas and New Year celebrations. Every year, a lot of people lose their lives in road accidents due to drink and drive, especially during festive periods like Christmas and New Year. As a result, their families are left devastated by the loss of their loved ones. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged to put an end to these unfortunate incidents.
