Guwahati News Desk: Farmers blocked the state and national highways in Haryana, in order to protest against an incident of lathicharge done by the police on agitating farmers in Karnal, near Bastara toll plaza.
The farmers who suffered through the lathicharge were protesting against a meeting on the upcoming municipal polls chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
The Congress went ahead to condemn the incident, and hitting out at the BJP, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, such acts by the ruling party would end up being “nails in its own coffin”.
Siding with the distressed farmers, the Congress leader wrote a Facebook post on Saturday which read, “Farmers work hard in the fields and the BJP sheds blood when they (farmers) talk about their rights.”
Further emphasizing that the three farm laws were framed to benefit the BJP’s billionaire friends, Priyanka said, “Why are the farmers opposing the three ‘black’ farm laws? Because if the right to decide the price and other things for crops grown by the hard work of farmers is given to BJP’s billionaire friends, then this will happen.”
The Congress chief spokesperson, Randeep Singh Surjewala, also slammed the BJP over Saturday’s incident in Karnal, through a Twitter post that read, “Today’s incident has hurt every people in Haryana…”
Surjewala further criticized the BJP for all the “bloodshed” and said that the incident would not be easily forgotten.
Meanwhile, the farmers have been agitating at the borders of Delhi demanding the repeal of the three farm laws introduced by the Centre, since November last year. They have repeatedly expressed fear over the laws doing away with the minimum support price (MSP), leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.
