Guwahati News Desk: The torrential rains have triggered severe floods and mudslides in northern Turkey, that has left at least six people dead and another person missing.
The announcement about the deaths was made by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency on Thursday.
The floods battered the Black Sea coastal provinces of Bartin, Kastamonu, Sinop and Samsun on Wednesday, demolishing homes and bridges and sweeping away cars. Even the rescue helicopters were stranded on the rooftops.
The worst-hit area appeared to be in Kastamonu, where flooding inundated much of the town of Bozkurt. Also as the floodwaters began to recede across the affected regions in Turkey’s north, six bodies were recovered by the rescuers in Kastamonu.
As per the sources, in Bozkurt one building collapsed and a second building was damaged in the town.
In Bartin province, at least 13 people were injured when a section of a bridge caved in and one person was missing.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Armed Forces’ helicopters lifted 80 people to safety in the region.
Furthermore, many of the affected areas were left without power and village roads were blocked.
Regarding the ongoing events, the climate scientists have said that there is little doubt that climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas is driving more extreme events, such as – heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods and storms. Such calamities are expected to happen more frequently on our warming planet.
