Guwahati News Desk: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Modern English School, Guwahati, Assam, organised a series of activities to educate and sensitise students on the health risks of consuming tobacco.

The school organised an interactive session for the students of Class 8 on the occasion under their “Lecture Series 2022- The Academic Learnathon for a better tomorrow”. The session was conducted by Dr. Shantanu Kumar Das, MBBS, MS Chief Coordinator Project – CHILD. It focused on educating students about the ill effects of consuming tobacco in any form and its impact on their bodies.

Students up to Class 5 created artwork on the theme of environment, while students from Class 6 onwards created posters and slogans on topics like quitting smoking, health is wealth and dangers of smoking.
The school also introduced a student board where they can put their thoughts in a creative way.

According to the fourth round of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS-4) released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), about one-fifth of the students between 13 to 15 years used any form of the tobacco product in their life. Due to various awareness initiatives taken by the government, there has been a 42 per cent decline in tobacco use among this age group in the last decade.
