Guwahati News Desk: In its drive against the helmet-related violation, the Guwahati Traffic police have fined over 8,127 people in the city.

“As instructed by Hon CM @himantabiswa, for the protection of our residents, a total of 8,127 offenders have been penalised for helmet related offences,” the Guwahati Traffic Police tweeted. We’ll keep driving until the roads are safe for everyone. When driving or riding pillion on a #HelmetsSaveLives motorcycle, please wear a helmet.”

To reduce the number of traffic accidents in the city, the District Transport Office Kamrup (M) made it necessary for both two-wheeler riders to wear helmets from December 1. The journey will continue until the roads are safe for everyone, according to the transportation agency.

Earlier this month to ensure safer streets and fewer accidents on New Year’s Eve, the Assam police and the Department of Transportation have planned to enforce stringent traffic restrictions in Guwahati. Both governments have chosen to keep a close eye on the streets and those who violate them, imposing stiff penalties on anyone who do so. Both authorities have established tight rules for upcoming holidays such as Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

According to Kamrup Metropolitan DTO Gautam Das, violations of these laws and regulations might result in a fine of Rs. 10,000, as well as possible jail term and licence suspension under Section 185. A driver who is intoxicated and drunk while driving faces a six-month jail term, a license suspension, or a fine under section 185.

Under section 185, every driver who is inebriated and drunk while driving faces a six-month prison sentence, a licence suspension, or a fine. In response to the rising number of traffic incidents involving two-wheelers, the Kamrup Metro district transport office (enforcement wing) launched a major campaign against helmetless riders and pillion riders in the Ganeshguri and Chandmari parts of the city on Wednesday.

During the voyage, several individuals were found disobeying the rules, and the offenders were penalised. 277 offences were documented by the agency, with fines totalling Rs 46,000 collected on the spot. District Transport Officer Himangshu Kumar Das spearheaded the initiative, which he said was initiated against both helmetless and pillion riders and will continue in the coming days.

The police agency also gave out roses to helmetless riders and pillions as part of the campaign to raise awareness about the need of safe riding. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the initiative, emphasising that two-wheeler users must adhere to all traffic laws. He said that on December 31, owing to a rise in road accidents on the final day of the year, no motorbikes will be permitted to exceed a speed of 60 kilometres per hour.
