Guwahati News Desk: The 34-year-old woman, who was raped and brutally assaulted with an iron rod, died at a hospital during treatment in the early hours of Saturday.

The heinous crime took place in suburban Sakinaka, Mumbai on Friday.

According to a police official, besides being raped and assaulted with an iron rod in her private parts, she was also stabbed with a knife by a man inside a stationary tempo.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray termed the incident as a “blot on humanity”, and ordered that charge sheet in the case must be filed within a month. Holding a meeting of top police officials, he also directed that measures should be taken to make the city safer for women.

Thackeray said, “The trial in the case will be held on a fast track and the victim, who succumbed to injuries today, will get justice.”

According to police, the accused Mohan Chouhan (45-year old) worked as a driver and lived on the pavement in the same area.

The police commissioner of Mumbai, Hemant Nagrale, informed that the crime came to light when the watchman of a company located on Khairani Road in Sakinaka called the police control room and said that a man was seen thrashing a woman. Police reached the spot within 10 minutes and found the victim inside a parked tempo. As her condition was serious, they decided to take her to a hospital in the same vehicle so as to save time. They got the key of the tempo from the watchman and drove her to Rajawadi hospital in suburban Ghatkopar. The police also obtained the CCTV footage of the spot. In the footage, the man was seen leaving the tempo, who was identified as Mohan Chouhan who hails from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

After the discovery, the blood-stained clothes of Chouhan were seized and were sent for forensic analysis to find out whether or not it was the victim’s blood.

However, Chouhan was found guilty, so was arrested and produced before a court which sent him in police custody till September 21.
