Guwahati News Desk: Police in the Cachar district of Assam detained six minors in connection with the ruckus created in the Silchar town during Christmas celebration.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramandeep Kaur said that four more minors were detained on Tuesday night. “All six are juveniles aged between 15 to 17 years and they confessed to their mistakes. They had gone to the church and asked Hindus to leave the place,” the official said.
Locals claimed that a group of boys, wearing saffron scarves, along with alleged members of Bajrang Dal, stopped Hindus from celebrating Christmas in the Silchar town area on Christmas Eve. The group also allegedly manhandled non-Christian people at the Presbyterian Church in Silchar.
In a viral video, a youth, claiming to be a leader of the Bajrang Dal’s local unit, was heard as saying, “We have no issue with the Christian and they have every right to celebrate Christmas. But we have the issue with the Hindus who went against their dharm [religion] to sing Merry Christmas instead of observing Tulsi Divas.”
“Tulsi Divas was also observed on December 25, but no one knows this. Instead of observing Tulsi Divas, they were singing Merry Christmas, lighting candles and taking pictures,” the youth said.
Based on that video, Cachar district police had detained the first two individuals. The Cachar district SP said that nobody lodged a written complaint, but police identified the people from the video footage and detained six.
