The NESO along with AASU stages demonstration in Guwahati against the Nagaland shootings

Guwahati News Desk: The NESO (North East Students’ Organization) along with the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union), on Thursday, staged a demonstration in Guwahati expressing solidarity with the NESO which had given a protest call against the killing of 14 innocent people by security forces in Nagaland’s Mon district and demanding the repeal of the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act). Members of AASU held the protest on the banks of Dighalipukhuri here. Students from Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and other states also participated in the protest demonstration. The protesters also demanded stringent punishment to the perpetrators of the incident.

In a joint statement, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah, AASU chief advisor and NESO advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The persons involved in the barbaric killing of 14 indigenous people in Oting village in Nagaland’s Mon district must be given stringent punishment. The AFSPA must be withdrawn from the north eastern states.”

“North East wants peace but the Centre has violated peace by killing innocent people. It seems that the Centre doesn’t want peace. The people of Nagaland are not alone. The entire indigenous people of Assam and other north eastern states are with them.”

Every member organizations of NESO carried out protests in the state capitals of the North East. Members of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) staged protest in Kohima — the capital of Nagaland; the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) staged protest in Shillong — the capital of Meghalaya; the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) in Itanagar — the capital of Arunachal Pradesh; the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) in Imphal — the capital of Manipur; the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) staged protest in Aizwal — the capital of Mizoram; and the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) — staged protest in Agartala — the capital of Tripura.
