Guwahati News Desk: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday, was stopped by the Uttar Pradesh police on her way to Agra, where she was heading to meet the family of the sanitation worker who recently died in police custody.
As per the sources, the UP police stopped the leader’s convoy at the Lucknow-Agra expressway, saying, “You don’t have permission, we can’t allow you.”
Asking why the UP police stops her wherever she goes, Gandhi shot back saying, “They say I can’t go to Agra. They stop me wherever I go. Should I keep sitting in restaurants? Just because it is politically convenient for them? I want to meet them, what is the big deal?”
Regarding the deceased sanitation worker named Arun, he was arrested by the police on Tuesday, in connection with a theft of Rs 25 lakh from a warehouse on October 17.
During an investigation, police rounded up several suspects and Arun was one of them.
In addition, during questioning he did confess of committing the crime, after which police recovered Rs 15 Lakhs from his home.
According to officials, he died in police custody after his health deteriorated during interrogation.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Agra Muniraj G said he suddenly fell sick on Tuesday night while a raid was being carried out at his house to recover the stolen money.
The SSP added that Arun was taken to a hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has filed a complaint, as they suspect that he was beaten up by police following which he died.
However, ADG Agra, Rajiv Krishna, has asserted that officers are still in contact with Arun’s family and action will be taken if there was any sort of negligence.
