Guwahati News Desk: At least 181 people were declared as foreigners who were illegally staying in Assam as they were currently lodged in six detention centers, Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the Assam Assembly on Monday. According to the reports, 29 detainees among 181 have died so far due to various reasons since 2009.
61 were declared foreigners from the 181 detainees as the remaining 120 are convicted by the court as they will be deported after the completion of the sentence period, says CM Sarma.
Nine convicted foreigners along with 22 children were currently taken in the detention camp at Kokrajhar, Silchar, and Tezpur. Among the 22 children, 20 are below 14 years of age.
Among the six detention camps, 41 detainees were taken in Goalpara, 11 in Kokrajhar, 49 in Silchar, 13 in Dibrugarh, 22 in Jorhat, and 458 in Tezpur.
According to the reports, Krishna Biswas was the very first inmate who was kept in the detention camp at Goalpara on December 23 in 2009 and since then a total of 2,551 detainees have been lodged in six camps till June 31 this year.
Earlier in the year 2020, around 481 have released after completion of two years of detention as per another order of the apex court in April last year.
CM Sarma also added around 1,36,173 cases of foreigners were still pending while 2,98,471 cases have been disposed of so far as the State government has repatriated 321 foreigners.
