Guwahati News Desk: At least 61 people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights have tested positive for Covid-19.

The information was released by the Dutch health authority on Saturday.

As per the reports, some 600 passengers were travelling to Amsterdam from South Africa.

In addition, the passengers were held for several hours after arrival as they were being tested for the virus.

According to sources, those who tested positive have been placed in isolation at a hotel near Schiphol airport.

Meanwhile, the Dutch authorities are carrying out further tests to see if there are any cases of Omicron virus, a variant of concern named by the WHO on Friday.

The Dutch health authority said in a statement, “The positive test results will be examined as soon as possible to determine whether this concerns the new worrisome variant, which has since been given the name Omicron variant.”

Regarding the Omicron virus, the variant was first reported to the World Health Organization in South Africa on 24 November.

Moreover, in the last few hours many countries around the world have restricted travel from the southern African region.

Furthermore, those who tested positive require to remain in quarantine at a hotel for seven days if showing symptoms and for five days if not. In addition, those in transit are allowed to continue their journeys.

However, there are reports that some passengers have not received written proof of a negative test and are therefore unable to board onward flights.
