Guwahati News Desk: Nearly 100 people are feared missing after the occurrence of a landslide at a jade mine in Myanmar.
The landslide occurred in the Hpakant area of northern Kachin on Wednesday.
The cause behind the landslide is believed to be an overflow of rubble discarded from lorries to the open-pit mines.
According to sources, several rescue teams consisting of about 200 people from Hpakant and the nearby town of Lone Khin are desperately searching for people, with most victims believed to be illegal miners.
In addition, boats have also been used to search for the missing in a nearby lake. However, so far one person is confirmed to be dead.
Furthermore, although Myanmar (Burma) is the world’s biggest source of jade, yet its mines have seen numerous accidents as the rubble often creates large slopes that can be dangerous in an area denuded of trees.
