Guwahati News Desk: Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim, an Indian-origin anti-apartheid icon who spent years imprisoned on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela and Ahmed Kathrada passed away on Monday.
The announcement about Ebrahim’s death was made by African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s ruling party for 84-years.
As per the reports, Ebrahim was suffering from a prolonged illness. However on Monday, he finally succumbed to his illness and died in the comfort of his home.
Expressing grief over the news of Ebrahim’s demise, ANC shared a post on Twitter that read as, “The ANC learnt with deep sadness of the passing of Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife and children, as well as their extended family, friends and comrades.”
The party added, “Comrade Ebi, as he was affectionately known, was a longstanding member of the ANC, a patriot who served his country in different capacities with humility, dedication and distinction.”
Regarding Ebrahim, he served time on Robben Island as a political prisoner alongside Mandela, Kathrada and others.
He would clearly state about his inspirations being the Satyagraha style of Mahatma Gandhi.
Moreover, Ibrahim leaves behind his wife Shannon, a celebrated foreign news writer for the Independent Media group, and two children.
