Guwahati News Desk: A professor of the Assam University of Silchar has rescued endangered peacock from being sold in the fish market.
Dr. Sarbani Giri, the Head of the Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics, saved an Indian peacock softshell turtle also known as Nilssonia Hurum.
According to the sources, Dr. Sarbani went to the fish market as usual to buy fish and later found that a man selling a lote turtle into pieces and sell it.
Looking at the incident, Dr. Sarbani bought the turtle alive by offering Rs 4,000 to the seller and brought it home.
Later, she called up Cachar Forest Division and handed over the turtle to take it to some safe place and release it in safe nature.
Soon after the incident, the forest officials have decided to hold a meeting with the fisheries department to create awareness among the fisherman about the turtle and protect them for the future.
