Guwahati News Desk: Asymptomatic cases of black fungus re-infection have been reported in Agra, on Tuesday.

The district in-charge for black fungus treatment, Akhil Pratap Singh, stated that in the past two months in the Agra district, 83 patients of black fungus had surfaced and out of these, 41 were cured of the infection.

However, among the black fungus patients in Agra, who had recovered initially, are now being diagnosed with the infection again. At least nine cases of Mucormycosis (Black fungus), had been confirmed at the Sarojini Naidu Medical College (SNMC) in Agra.

All the patients re-infected are said to be above 40-years of age, who had earlier tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, two more patients were diagnosed with black fungus infection in the lungs in the city, and they have been admitted at the medicine ward of the SN Medical College.

So far, in Agra district, 10 people have died of the black fungus infection and 16 have lost one eye and as mentioned earlier, these patients are above 45-years old, who had earlier tested positive for Covid-19.

The Black Fungus is an aggressive fungal infection that enters the body through the nose. It is an opportunistic disease seen in low immunity conditions such as in patients with diabetes, patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunosuppressed patients who have undergone transplant surgeries, etc. The early symptoms of the infection begins with nasal congestion since the nose is the point of entry. The fungus further corrodes through the nasal cavity and enters the orbital cavity or the eye socket, for which a patient may complain of double vision, blurred vision or complete blindness and within a day or two the eye bulges.
