Guwahati News Desk: The death toll due to the heavy rains and terrifying floods in central China’s Henan province has climbed up to 302, which is three times higher than the previous official figures.

According to the provincial authorities, the previous death toll on Friday was 99. But now, the provincial death toll stands at 302, while 50 others are still missing.

The torrential rains have caused severe damage and harm to the regions and the people.
Infact, more than 14.53 million people in 150 county-level regions had been affected by the heavy rains.
Over 1.09 million hectares of crops were damaged, and over 30,600 houses collapsed across the province.

Meanwhile, the local government has been going under severe criticism for not being transparent about the loss of life and damage caused by the deluge.

However, as the death toll rose up, the State Council announced that it has decided to set up an investigation team to assess the response to the devastating flood in Zhengzhou, capital of east-central China’s Henan province, which is also the worst-hit amongst all.

The team will be headed by the Ministry of Emergency Management and will include officials and experts from relevant departments.

The investigation aims to summarize the experience and lessons drawn from the response and propose measures that can be taken to improve disaster prevention and relief in the future.

The ongoing massive floods, have been described by the meteorologists as a once-in-a-lifetime event, that has resulted in occurrences of apocalyptic scenes throughout the regions.

Moreover, numerous videos have also been surfacing on social media, showing people stuck in cars being washed away by rampaging waters in the main streets of the city, petrified passengers trapped in subway trains, people clinging on to the rails, desperately waiting for help as the floodwaters rises up to their necks, etc.
