Guwahati News Desk: The remnants of Hurricane Ida caused flash flooding, as a result of which almost 50 people died in the Northeastern states of US.
As per the sources, 12 in New York and 23 in New Jersey, have been killed by the floodwaters and by other incidents related to the storm. Even a two-year-old boy was among the victims.
However, the authorities fear the toll will increase further.
Governor of New Jersey, Phillip D. Murphy informed that several people were still missing in the floods.
Governor of New York, Kathy C Hochul said on Friday morning that New York would easily surpass a $30 million threshold required to receive federal assistance.
Regarding Friday morning, nearly 50,000 homes in the region were still without power, including 26,000 in Pennsylvania, 12,000 in New Jersey and nearly 8,000 in New York.
However, the affected regions are still continuing the daunting task of assessing damage from the storm, digging out and cleaning.
During Wednesday night, New York suffered its wettest hour on record, with more than 80mm of rain falling in Central Park in the space of 60 minutes. Infact, it even surpassed the previous record of 49mm that was set in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Henri just last month.
Moreover, states of emergency were declared in New York and New Jersey as the remnants of a hurricane sparked flash floods that forced New York City to suspend its subway services.
