Guwahati News Desk: A full-grown female giraffe died due to accidental strangulation at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati on Thursday night.
Authorities of the Assam State Zoo-cum-botanical garden said that it was an accidental death.
Assam State Zoo’s Divisional Forest Officer-in-charge, Ashwini Kumar, told India Today that an inquiry has been initiated into the incident.
“A preliminary inquiry has suggested that the giraffe died due to accidental strangulation. But the actual facts will come in the post-mortem report. The post-mortem has been completed and we are awaiting reports,” Ashwini Kumar said.
It is suspected that the giraffe’s neck got stuck in a railing of the feeding platform.
The giraffe, named Anny, was transported to the Assam State Zoo from Patna in 2019 under an animal exchange programme.
