Guwahati News Desk: The Forensic Science Institute under the Directorate of Forensic Science, Assam, is likely to become operational from next year.
Very often it is seen from criminal investigation is hampered due to lack of forensic knowledge and expertise of investigating officers. Once the Forensic Science Institute becomes operational, investigating officers of various agencies, judicial magistrates and newly-recruited forensic staff will get the much-needed training in forensic science. At present, investigating officers from other places get their training at the forensic lab in Kahilipara.
The Forensic Science Institute is under construction and it is being built at a total cost of Rs 4 crore. According to sources, a proposal has been submitted for appointment of Academic Director at the Forensic Science Institute.
On the other hand, by next year, two regional forensic labs will also become functional – one at Silchar and the other at Bongaigaon. While the lab in Silchar will be set up on 3,000 sq km area in the premises of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), the lab in Bongaigaon will come up on 2,500 sq km area in the premises of Bongaigaon Police Reserve. Both the forensic laboratories will operate under the Directorate of Forensic Science, Assam. After these two forensic laboratories start functioning, it is expected that the workload on the forensic laboratory in Guwahati will be reduced to a great extent.
