Guwahati News Desk: Assam police conducted a raid in different areas of Guwahati city in view of their drive against illegal trading of meat by the brokers. Through the drive-by Assam police, it is discovered that illegal sheep meats are being sold in the meat markets of Guwahati. The sheep meat is sold to the customers in the name of mutton giving the description as ‘patha’ meat i.e. castrated male (wether) goat meat by some of the butchers.
Assam police have begun an explicit drive against illegal meat trading in various meat markets by the brokers. The city police stated that the illegal selling of seep meat was going on by some butchers in the markets of Guwahati. Various shops in Guwahati that sold meat have been seized by the Police including the major outlets in the city Ujjain Bazar, Ulubari and Paltanbazar. According to the reports by Assam police, the people involved in the smuggling of the supply of sheepmeat imports the illegal meets from one of the goat markets located in Juripar of Guwahati, Assam.
The police informed that the meat sellers at first preserve the sheepmeat and then as per their convenience they sell it to different customers. The police have not just raided the meat markets in the city but also conducted a raid on a number of fish markets available in different regions.
As an initiative, the police later destroyed all the illegal meats and fish brought to sell in the market by pouring phenyl on them so that they cannot be consumed or sold further. The police officials also informed that penalties have been imposed on all those traders who were selling illegal meat and fish in Guwahati.
