Guwahati News Desk: Due to an overnight heavy downpour in Mumbai, 15 people have died and several others are feared to have been trapped after the terrifying landslides.

Sources have stated that 15 people died, after they got trapped under the rubble of their homes in Mumbai’s Chembur and Vikhroli areas between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

As stated by the officials, Mumbai city recorded 156.94 mm rain between 8 pm and 2 am, adding that the eastern suburbs recorded 143.14 mm and the western 125.37 mm, respectively.

The city’s municipal body, BMC, informed that in the Vikhroli area a ground-plus-one residential building collapsed killing three people, in the morning hours of Sunday.
The officials have stated that fifteen people have been rescued from Chembur’s Bharat Nagar area and nine people from Vikroli’s Surya Nagar. Also, all those injured have been moved to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
The officials further stated that rescue operations are still going on in both these areas as more people are feared to be trapped.

Meanwhile, a red alert has been sounded in the city and people have been advised not to venture out in the open.

Regarding the ongoing scenario, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed that he was saddened by the loss of lives and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those who died.

Apart from Vikhroli and Chembur, the downpour has caused heavy flooding in low lying areas of Chunabhatti, Sion, Dadar, and Gandhi Market, Chembur and Kurla LBS Road.

Several visuals from news agencies have showed the cars being swept away by the undercurrents in the Borivali east area.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Mumbai will continue to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next five days.
