Guwahati News Desk: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a notification that a team of Enforcement Branch of Guwahati Municipal Corporation carried out an eviction drive against illegal street vendors in footpaths in the Uzanbazar area of Guwahati on June 1.
The following drive was carried out by Municipal Secretary and Collector of Enforcement Branch ACS Aditya Gogoi under the leadership of Commissioner of GMC Debashish Sharma.
During the past weeks, GMC has received several complaints against the vendors operating in the Uzanbazar area for a long time hence the eviction drive was carried out to free the footpaths of the Uzanbazar area from rampant encroachment by vendors and shopkeepers.
In the official release, GMC has stated that the footpaths are only used by the pedestrians and hence they should be kept free and without any obstruction for the free flow of pedestrian traffic. As keeping this in mind, the Enforcement wing of GMC plans to intensify its eviction drives in the coming days.
The illegally occupied footpath by the vendors in the Uzanbazar area leads to massive traffic because of customers who flout to buy vegetables, fruits from the roads which reduces the road space. Some of the people also use to park their two-wheelers to buy essential commodities leading to never-ending traffic.
Due to the regular unwanted traffic and blockage of footpath GMC receives multiple complaints against the vendors.
