Guwahati News Desk: Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur have qualified for the finals after finishing second in the women’s discus throw at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
Kamalpreet becomes the second thrower who achieved the automatic qualification for the finals after Valarie Allman of the United States in the first attempt.
On the first attempt, Kamalpreet threw at 60.29 and improved to 63.97 on the second attempt. During the third attempt, she automatically qualified for the finals.
Kamalpreet to take part in the finals to be held on August 2. Earlier, she broke the national record twice, first in the Federation Cup in March when she became the first Indian woman to go over 65 m. In the Indian Grand Prix-4 where she bettered it to 66.59m.
Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Kamalpreet Kaur for reaching finals as he tweeted, “Women power continues to shine! Congratulations to Kamalpreet Kaur on qualifying for the finals of the women’s Discus Throw final with a 64.00 throw in #TokyoOlympics2020. We wish you all the best,”.
