Guwahati News Desk: Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi on Thursday has declared that the security forces have killed Abu Yaser al-Issawi, an Islamic State commander who had claimed to be the leader of the group in Iraq and its ‘deputy caliph’.
PM Kadhimi tweeted, referring to IS by its Arabic acronym, “We promised and fulfilled. I gave my word to pursue Daesh terrorists; we gave them a thundering response. Our heroic armed forces have eliminated Daesh commander Abu Yaser Al-Issawi as part of an intelligence-led operation. Long live Iraq and its patriotic armed forces.”
Al-Issawi was supposedly killed in an operation west of the city of Iraqi Kirkuk where IS militants are known to still have a presence.
The operation was led by Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service, in cooperation with Iraqi intelligence.
