National Award-winning actor Surekha Sikri dies at 75

Guwahati News Desk: Leaving behind a rich body of work spread across theatre, television and films, the 75-year old veteran actor, Surekha Sikri, passes away on Friday.

It was in September, 2020, when Surekha had suffered her first brain stroke. However, on the morning of 16 July, she died following a cardiac arrest, in Mumbai.

Vivek Sidhwani, her agent, informed to the media that, “Three-time national award winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke.”

He added, “She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. The family asks for privacy at this time. Om Sai Ram.”

Surekha first appeared on the silver screen in the 1978 film “Kissa Kursi Ka.” From there on, she went on to gain acclaim for her roles in films like Govind Nihalani’s “Tamas”, Shyam Benegal’s “Mammo” and “Sardari Begum.”

In the 90s, she prominently featured in television shows like “Banegi Apni Baat” and “Just Mohabbat.”

Some of her well known TV roles include of ‘Dadisa‘ from the popular Indian soap opera “Balika Vadhu” and the cantankerous-yet-lovable mother-in-law from “Badhaai Ho!”

In the world of cinema, Surekha worked with the celebrated filmmakers like Rituparno Ghosh, Aparna Sen and Mani Kaul among others.

The film titled “Badhaai Ho”, starring Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana in lead roles, was one of the biggest hits of the year and brought Surekha her third National Film Award.

Including many others, Neena Gupta also remembered the late actress for her work in an emotional video.

Regarding her most recent work, Surekha was last seen in Netflix’s anthology “Ghost Stories” (2020), in the story directed by Zoya Akhtar.
