Guwahati News Desk: Around 10,621 pigs died since March due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) in Mizoram, says officials on Friday.

Around 11 districts were hit by African Swine Fever which has affected business and put a loss of around Rs 117 crore, as data released by the state Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department.

The Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister K Beichhua hold an immediate meeting with the pig farmers and discussed and review the massive deaths of the pigs by African Swine Fever.

According to the sources, the first death of a pig was reported on March 21 at Lungsen village in Lungdei district near Bangladesh and Myanmar border.
Later the ASF has increased tremendously in the State and reaches over 11 districts.

According to the sources, the annual pork business in the northeast region is worth around Rs 8 to 10 thousand crores as it is one of the most popular meats consumed by the people of the northeast.

The African Swine Fever was first detected in the year 1921 in Kenya as medical experts have stated that the virus won’t infect humans while consuming.

The Mizoram administration has taken prevention like massive sanitisation of the pig habitations and shelters, awareness among the pig farm owners including the isolation of the infected pigs as various strategies were taken and implemented across the affected districts in Mizoram to hold and minimize the death of the pigs who were dying from African Swine Fever.
