Guwahati News Desk: The Peruvian President, Pedro Castillo, named Guido Bellido, a member of his Marxist party, as the new Prime Minister, on Thursday.
Bellido was appointed as the new Prime Minister, during an event at the Pampas de Ayacucho Historic Sanctuary, in Ayacucho, Peru on Thursday.
As per the sources, it was a move which dimmed the hopes of a moderate left administration and will face an uphill confirmation battle in Congress.
Regarding the 42-year old Bellido, he is a native of the nearby Andean region of Cuzco and is little known in Lima-centric political circles, has a masters in economics and most recently was working for Peru’s government statistics agency INEI. He is also an elected Congressman and is a member of the self-described Marxist-Leninist Free Peru party, with which Castillo won the presidency this year in the Andean nation.
According to sources, Bellido’s swearing-in was held in the Southern Andean city of Ayacucho, where he spoke in the indigenous Quechua language as part of his swearing in.
Meanwhile, the new appointment underscores the sway that far-left Free Peru will have in Castillo’s administration, which is set to last until 2026.
