Guwahati News Desk: Marrying a commoner, the princess of Japan, Mako, loses her royal status on Tuesday.
No longer a royal, Mako has now taken the surname of her husband, Kei Komuro.
As per the sources, the marriage document for Mako and Komuro were submitted by a palace official on Tuesday morning ( October 26 ).
In addition, the former princess has also declined the ¥140 million ($1.23 million) dowry to which she was entitled for leaving the imperial family, palace. However, she chose to do so because of the criticism over her marrying a man some consider unfit for the princess.
Moreover, the excessive press coverage as well as the relentless attacks on social media have had an impact on Mako’s mental health, and she is now suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
At a news conference alongside her new husband after their low-key wedding, Mako said the “incorrect” reports about Komuro had caused her “great fear, stress and sadness”.
Regarding, Mako, she turned 30 three days prior to the wedding, and she is a niece of Emperor Naruhito. Also, she is the first imperial family member since World War II to not receive a payment while marrying a commoner.
Regarding the history of her relationship with her husband, she and Komuro were classmates at Tokyo’s International Christian University, where they made an announcement in September 2017, about them intending to marry the following year. However, due to the occurrence of some financial dispute two months later, the wedding was suspended.
Furthermore, the couple are expected to move to the US, where Komuro works as a lawyer, but the move has drawn comparisons with British royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, earning the newlyweds the nickname “Japan’s Harry and Meghan”.
