Guwahati News Desk: A historic decision was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday as the highest sporting honour of India, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was renamed after the ultimate hockey hero Dhyan Chand as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
The name changed from the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of the Congress to the legend of sports Dhyan Chand.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had been getting lots of requests from the people of India to change the name of the award and by looking into it, the historic decision was taken.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiments, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!”.
“Major Dhyan Chand was among India’s foremast sportspersons who brought honour and pride for India. It is fitting that our nation’s highest sporting honour will be named after him”, PM Modi added.
