Guwahati News Desk: The Kamrup (M) district administration has organized a task team that will monitor the city on December 31 and January 1, according to Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha. Further, the Commissioner stated that anyone who drinks and drives will be in serious trouble.

“This year, we’ll attempt to make the city accident-free”. On December 31, no organizations or individuals could celebrate in hotels or restaurants,” he added.

Meanwhile, in order to prevent accidents in the New Year, the traffic department and DTO are undertaking a crusade against intoxicated driving in the city, as directed by the Chief Minister. In a series of tweets by Guwahati Traffic Police as a vigilance drive against the Drunk and Drive case in the city, they update how many people were intercepted as well share posters to spread the awareness.

The licenses of the offenders have been suspended and Rs 10,000 has been fined for each one of them. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma already warned citizens of the state that individuals found violating traffic rules, indulged in drunken drive, the strictest action will be taken.

“As we approach the New Year, I fervently call to the people to help us build an accident-free environment by driving with prudence and attention,” the chief minister said in his new message, which was broadcast on Monday.

2,756 people have perished in 6,745 traffic accidents so far this year, with another 5252 injured. This equates to 8 deaths every day on average. Assam lost 29 individuals in traffic accidents on two days, December 31st last year and January 1st this year.

“We can avoid these accidents by driving within speed limits, obeying all traffic rules, not driving while intoxicated, and having both riders in two-wheelers wear seat belts and helmets,” Sarma stated in his message.
