Guwahati News Desk: U.S. Representative Mary Gay Scanlon was carjacked at gunpoint by two men in South Philadelphia on Wednesday.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, when Scanlon was walking to her parked vehicle after attending a meeting in FDR park, when two armed men demanded her keys.
However, the two men left with her car, a blue Acura MDX, and luckily she was not physically harmed or injured.
Reacting to the incident, Mayor Jim Kenney took to Twitter to express his thoughts saying, “appalled to learn of this violent crime.”
He added, “My thoughts are with her during what I’m sure is a traumatic time.”
He further added, “It’s disheartening and infuriating that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of peace—one of our city’s parks.”
However, after the incident was brought to light, immediate search took place and as a result, the Delaware State Police were successful in locating her car on Wednesday night in Newark, Delaware, about 45 miles (74 kilometers) from Philadelphia.
Furthermore, five suspects were found inside the car, who are currently in police custody, and as of yet the names or other details of the suspects have not been released.
