Guwahati News Desk: One of the popular places Silpukhuri which is situated in the heart of Guwahati has its own historical identity.
Here’s why Silpukhuri is popular among tourists for its historic presence.
1) Navagraha Temple: The most popular historical place in the city is Navagraha Temple, situated at the top of the Navagraha hill or Chitrasal Hill in Guwahati constructed by Ahom King Rajeswer Singha at the time he visited Guwahati. The enshrines in this temple are the nine Shilvalingams which represents the nine Celestial bodies. Each covered with a coloured garment in between the centre of the temple symbolising the supernatural power Sun.
2) Silpukhuri Pond: The popular Silpukhuri pond of Guwahati was made for the Navagraha Temple which was constructed during the year 1753 by officer Tarun Duara Phukan of the Tarun Duara clan during the rule of Rajeswer Singha (1751-1759).
The pond has nine well of freshwater dedicated to Navagraha situated at Chitrasal hill. Earlier Silpukhuri pond was known as Na Kunia Pukhuri.
3) War Cemetery: The War Cemetery is situated in the Navagraha Road of Silpukhuri. The War Cemetery is the most popular place to visit as it was started during the Second World War for burials from the several military hospitals posted in the area. There are total of 486 Commonwealth servicemen from the Second World War were commemorated in the cemetery. 25 of the Commonwealth servicemen burials in the cemetery are unidentified. It also contains 24 Chinese war graves.
