Guwahati News Desk: At least 17 people were killed in a deadly explosion that occurred at an ammunition disposal plant in Russia on Friday.

According to officials, the fire started at one of the plant’s gunpowder workshops.

As informed by the Emergency Situations Ministry, the blast was caused by an unspecified failure during the production process.

In addition, several images from the disaster circulated on social media, showing scattered, charred debris as smoke billows over a demolished building.

According to the initial reports, seven people were reported to be dead and nine to be missing, but hours later it was announced that all those missing were also found dead.

In addition, the body of the 17th victim was taken out from under the rubble of the workshop.

Meanwhile, the Regional Governor Nikolay Lubimov has declared October 25 a day of mourning in the Ryazan region, for those killed in the blast and has insisted on doing more for ensuring the safety of those working in such hazardous industries.

Lubimov said, “This is an egregious case, and everything possible must be done so that nothing like this will happen again. Both in hazardous industries and in those that are lower in hazard class, but can pose a threat to the life and health of people.”

The Governor further added that he would recommend that authorities carry out unscheduled inspections at such facilities.

Moreover, a total of 170 emergency workers and 50 vehicles were involved in dealing with the fire caused due to the explosion.

Furthermore, the search and rescue operations at the explosion site have been completed and no new bodies or injuries have been discovered.
