Guwahati News Desk: Three engineers of the Department of Island and Water Transport have been suspended with immediate effect by Government of Assam for alleged negligence which lead massive boat accident at Brahmaputra river at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat on Wednesday.
The suspended engineers are Bokramaditya Choudhury, Executive Engineer of IWT of Dibrugarh Division; Mukut Gogoi Assistant Executive Engineer of IWT of Jorhat Sub-Division and Ratul Tamuli Junior Engineer of IWT of Jorhat Sub-Division as the officials were put under suspension.
One died in a massive accident after a government passenger ferry of the Inland Water Transport Department of Assam carrying goods coming from Majuli to Nimati Ghat collided head to head with Maa Kamala private operator travelling to Majuli.
The Maa Kamala ferry immediately capsized in the Brahmaputra river as both the ferries were carrying more than 100 passengers.
Soon after the incident, around 20 people have been rescued including seven children whereas rescue operation is still underway and many people reportedly to be missing.
Meanwhile, State Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has expressed deep shock and grief over the ferry accident at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat.
The minister is closely monitoring the ongoing rescue of the boat accident and relief accident. Many of the passengers were seen swimming towards the bank of the river to safe their lives.
A special team has been sent from Guwahati City to coordinate the relief and rescue operation at accident site.
