Guwahati News Desk: Around 4.27 lakh hectares of land swallowed in the mighty Brahmaputra river due to erosion during the monsoon season in Assam.
The erosion of land has greatly impacting the development of the State, says Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika in the Assam Assembly on Wednesday. It was said that the main problem that caused flood and erosion are the main disasters caused by the Brahmaputra and Barak rivers and their tributaries.
In the Assembly the Minister Pijush Hazarika has said that the Water Resource Department has been implemented erosion protection schemes as per necessity.
Earlier, in the year 2015, the assembly has passed a resolution for the river erosion within the guidelines of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The disaster management department and the State government has declared the erosion as a specific disaster in the year 2015 as the 10 per cent of the allocated funds can be used for the State specific disaster under SDRF, says Minister Hazarika.
The prevention of the erosion due to flood and the resettlement of the people affected by the erosion are the two only aspects of the disaster which is very important to solve it during the necessity period.
According to the sources, the commission has recommended Rs 100 crore under National Disaster Response Force for the resettlement of the people who got affected by erosion and 1,500 crore under National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) separately to take safety measure to control the disaster erosion.
