Guwahati News Desk: The Bharathidasan University, Indian Association of Women’s Studies (IAWS) and Regional Association for Women’s Studies (RAWS), All India Women’s Studies Students’ Forum (AIWSSF) have organized a 16-day online webinar series on Google Meet from November 25 to December 10, 2021, in commemoration of the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, 2021 with the theme ‘Orange the World: End of Violence against Women Now’.
The third day of the webinar series on Saturday was hosted by Dr. Poonam Kakoti Borah, Assistant Professor of the Department of Women’s Studies, Gauhati University. The speaker of the webinar was Surendra Kumar. He is currently posted as Inspector General Police, Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Crime against Women & Children and Human Trafficking, Assam. he gave a power-point presentation on the theme ‘Registration of Cases of CAW (Crime Against Women) in Assam- a Critical Analysis’.
He said that according to the 2020 cognizance rate report, Assam ranks first in terms of CAW.
“In India, more than 43.29 percent of CAW cases registered are against cruelty by husband. Assam has 66.68 per cent registered cases against cruelty by husband. According to the 2020 report, Assam ranks 7th in terms of age contribution, of which the major cases registered are of kidnapping and cruelty by husband.”
However, he said, FIRs does not give a true picture of the crime because false cases might also get registered in the police stations. Kumar said that it was high time to create awareness about the various crimes against women. The webinar was attended by students, professors and research scholars of 16 different universities across the country.
