Assam CM met injured passengers of Nimatighat tragic boat accident

Guwahati News Desk: Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma met the injured passengers of the boat accident and enquired about their health at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital (JMCH) in Guwahati on Thursday.

Assam CM Dr Sarma discussed about the injured people in the accident with the doctor and urges to ensure best treatment. CM also met other rescued passengers in Jorhat who had survived the tragic accident.

At least one passenger have died in a tragic ferry accident at Nimatighat-Kamlabari route in the Jorhat and Majuli districts of Assam on Wednesday.

According to the sources, a government passenger ferry of the Inland Water Transport Department of Assam carrying goods coming from Majuli to Nimati Ghat collided head to head with Maa Kamala private operator travelling to Majuli.

The Maa Kamala ferry immediately capsized in the Brahmaputra river as both the ferries were carrying more than 100 passengers and 87 passengers of Maa Kamla boat were rescued and tracked alive.

Soon after the incident, around 20 people have been rescued including seven children whereas rescue operation is still underway and many people reportedly to be missing.

A total of 41 personnel including 9 deep divers of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have conducted search operation with 7 boats and 167 personnel of 1st Bn. NDRF team stationed at Jorhat and 12th Bn. NDRF conducting search operation with 24 rescue boats with 30 deep divers.

Three engineers of the Department of Island and Water Transport have been suspended with immediate effect by Government of Assam for alleged negligence which lead to massive boat accident at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat on Wednesday.

The suspended engineers are Bikramaditya Choudhury, Executive Engineer of IWT of Dibrugarh Division; Mukut Gogoi Assistant Executive Engineer of IWT of Jorhat Sub-Division and Ratul Tamuli Junior Engineer of IWT of Jorhat Sub-Division.
