Guwahati News Desk: The Assam government on Wednesday approved the new school system under the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 to implement the NEP in the state by 2023. The decision was taken during the Assam cabinet meeting held in Bongaigaon under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam cabinet decided that the school education structure should be changed from the existing 10+2 to 5+3+3+4.

“5 years (pre-school) and 3 years (Classes 3,4 & 5) will be under the Directorate of Elementary Education, 3 years (Classes 6, 7 & 8) and 4 years (Classes 9, 10, 11 & 12) will be under the Directorate of Education. The change will come into effect from 2023,” Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The state cabinet also decided that all government employees in Assam will get a four-day leave to meet their parents in the month of January next year so that they can spend time with their parents.

“The state government has declared January 6 and 7 next year as holidays for state government employees along with usual holidays on January 8 and 9 being 2nd Saturday and Sunday respectively and it will be applicable to only employees who have their parents or in-laws alive,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The Assam cabinet also decided to form a panel for Satra land encroachment and the committee headed by MLA Padma Hazarika along with MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Rupak Sarma will ascertain the total of Satra land under encroachment.

“The state government will observe Bir Lachit Borphukan’s birth anniversary and the Culture department will organize programmes including national seminars to commemorate 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan,” the Assam Chief Minister said.
