Guwahati News Desk: A notorious veteran cattle mafia was shot down by police while trying to flee from police custody and received injuries in Kokrajhar.
The accused, Sarongi Chinna was arrested in Gossaigaon. The incident took place after the 39-year-old cattle mafia was taken to Sukanjohra at 1 am to identifie the residence of the co-accused. Chinna then snatched the service pistol of a sub-inspector of the Kokrajhar Police Station and flee towards a jungle.
Kokrajhar Police immediately run after the accused to avoid any danger and shot two rounds at Chinna.
Accused Chinna has been admitted to RNB Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar for treatment.
Assam Police is working with all their effort to cut down all links of cattle smuggling in the State as most of the cattle smuggling cases were reported in Dhubri district of Assam.
Earlier, a mastermind of cattle smuggling Mojjamil Hoque of Barpeta Road was also arrested on June 21 and remanded to police custody for 10 days after producing in court on June 22.
Meanwhile, on May 22, the Governor of Assam Jagdish Mukhi stated that the government of Assam will bring legislation in the next session to protect the cows in Assam.
Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Act will not be implemented to ban beef/cow slaughter but it will only be intended to stop the large scale smuggling cases of cows in Assam as the existing IPC sections didn’t require provisions to deal with this issue.
