Guwahati News Desk: A New Year gift for those travelling between North and South banks. Travel from Jorhat-Lakhimpur via Majuli will be a matter of around an hour by road. Works of the project from Majuli-Lakhimpur will start from the next financial year. The completion schedule of the project is 36 months.
The work of the bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli is underway. The onward journey from Majuli to Bongalmara in Lakhimpur will be possible with two major four-lane bridges – one over the Subansiri and the other over the Luit. The journey from Majuli to Lakhimpur will be possible through the development of several existing roads in the entire stretch.
This is a major policy decision taken by the State Government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to make the communication system a hassle-free affair. According to state PWD sources, the entire stretch from Balichapori in Majuli to Bongalmara in Lakhimpur is 19 km. The length of the bridge over the Subansiri will be 2 km, and the one over the Luit will be 700 metres. Existing roads in the stretch will be two-lane.
If everything goes as planned, the authorities will issue the work order of the project from Majuli to Lakhimpur by this fiscal, and the work will start from the coming fiscal, PWD sources said. The estimated cost of this externally-aided project in EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) mode is Rs 785.364 crore.
