Guwahati News Desk: Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s residence in the city of Kurunegala in the north-western province was set on fire hours after he tendered his resignation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as the island nation of Sri Lanka descended into the throes of severe civil strife with several cabinet minister’s homes being set on fire.
An AFP correspondent reported shots were fired from inside the Sri Lankan prime minister’s official mansion on Monday as thousands of protestors broke through the main gate and set fire to a parked truck. APP Police also used tear gas to disperse demonstrators who had been attacked earlier in the day by supporters of outgoing Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
According to police sources, bullets were fired in the air to prevent the mob from breaching the residence’s inner security ring, where Rajapaksa, who resigned as prime minister earlier in the day, was holed up with several followers.
