Guwahati News Desk: Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Aqleh was shot “in the face” while wearing a press vest, Qatar’s assistant foreign minister Lolwah Al Khater said Wednesday, condemning “state sponsored Israeli terrorism”.
While covering an Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank, a journalist was shot and killed, while another was injured. Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera’s Arabic language programme, was shot and killed in the town of Jenin early on Wednesday. After being shot in the rear, another Palestinian journalist, Ali Al- Samudi, was taken to the hospital in a stable condition. Ms. Abu Akleh, a 51-year-old US citizen, can be seen in CCTV footage of the event wearing a blue flak jacket with the word ‘PRESS’ clearly written on it. While the Palestinian health ministry claims that Israeli fire hit the reporters, the Israeli military says it is “investigating” the incident and is looking into it.
While the Palestinian health ministry alleges the journalists were hit by Israeli fire, the Israeli military claims it is “probing” the event and investigating whether the journalists were hit by “Palestinian gunmen.” In a statement carried on its channel, Al Jazeera condemned Israel and demanded the international community to “condemn and hold the Israeli Occupation forces accountable for deliberately targeting and killing our colleague, Shireen Abu Akleh.”
