Guwahati News Desk: Indian-American tennis player Samir Banerjee clinched the Junior Championships title at Wimbledon on Sunday.
17-years-old originally having Assam connection Samir successfully defeated Viktor Lilov by 7-5, 6-3 in the finals. According to the sources, Samir’s father Kunal Banerjee said he wants to have talked with the Indian tennis legend Leander Paes who was also the Junior Wimbledon championship title in singles at the beginning of his career.
Samir started his career at the Center Court Tennis Academy at the age of 5 in New Jersey.
Earlier, Samir clinched several tournaments including a sub-junior event in 2017. Samir Banerjee won the title of Under 14 Winter Championship in America. Samir continuously having his training in Florida and Frankfurt.
Two years back Samir played ITF tournament in New Delhi as mostly his relatives are from Kolkata. Samir’s father Kunal Banerjee used to stay in Dibrugarh district in Assam as his grandfather used to work in Oil India Limited (OIL). After getting enrolled in IIT Mumbai Kunal Banerjee came to the United States.
Samir is likely to be included in the top-10 in junior ranking as now Samir is eyeing the qualifying tournaments of the senior event. Currently, Samir is ranked 19 in the world.
