Guwahati News Desk: Guwahati without flash flood is something one can never imagine, even in our dreams. Flash flood is and will always be an inevitable part of the ‘Smart City’ plan. Well let’s not joke around, but in a true sense are we (responsible citizens) even a percent aware of what a small step of ours can do to this beautiful city of Assam? And the answer is no!

2019-20 was no less than a roller coaster ride for every people, and 2021 seems to be an upgraded version of the same. Let me elaborate, we all have once in our lifetime have played video games, now our life too has become one of such scenes where we get new levels everytime after crossing all hurdles and the journey is constant.

Environmental crisis at the time of coronavirus is like a cherry on the top and yet, people are giving less heed to what’s happening in and around us. The former and the ruling government has taken an ample amount of steps to save the ecosystem, but unless we take it seriously no government can ever fulfill that. Especially Guwahati, the hub of the Northeastern states, and its people are no less.

Plastic wastes have become a major problem in Guwahati, due to which drains in the Monsoon season fail to work effectively. Rajgarh-Zoo Road area has created history in this matter, for which directly or indirectly, we all suffer. Dumping off plastic wastes into the drainage system is no cool. Shanti Path and Bhangagarh link roads are the worst, even the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has shared pictures of the vulnerable situation of the drains and stated that clogged drains with plastic waste have been a constant source of waterlogging in the city.
Earlier, GMC though has banned single-use plastics but didn’t bring effective results and now they have urged people not to block drains with plastics and to avoid water logging during the monsoon season. Constant support and cooperation from Guwahatians can only make the city a better place to live.

Being a sensible citizen of this 21st century, where someone is dropping out of schools just to bring one’s notice into the matter of severe environmental crisis, it’s time we too pull our socks. Otherwise, like covid-19 few more viruses will bring apocalypse into this world, and this time, for sure humanity will end in no time.
