Guwahati News Desk: South Africa’s Parliament building was burning in flames in Cape Town on Sunday.
As informed by the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Patricia de Lille, the fire started on the third floor of a building that eventually spread to the National Assembly building, where South Africa’s Parliament sits.
Expressing grief over the event, De Lille said, “This is a very sad day for democracy for Parliament is the home of our democracy.”
On receiving the news, the firefighters immediately reached the spot and battled the blaze, that sent a dark plume of smoke and flames into the air above the center of Cape Town.
Meanwhile, the Rescue Service spokesman Jermaine Carelse said that no injuries have been reported.
In addition, the authorities did admit that they had the fear of the parts of buildings, which were first built in the late 1800s, to collapse because of the heat.
However, the police have now successfully cordoned off the complex and closed down the roads.
