Guwahati News Desk: After the single-engine boat was banned by the government of Assam with immediate effect plying in Brahmaputra river post-Nimatighat boat tragedy in Jorhat, thousands of passengers from South Salmara Mankachar and Meghalaya were left stranded in Dhubri district since Monday.
According to the sources, the passengers had arrived from South Salmara Mankachar and Meghalaya in Dhubri district on Monday morning but while returning from Dhubri district they were restricted to ply in the boat with single-engine in Brahmaputra river after State government-imposed restriction.
Most of the passengers came to Dhubri for treatment and other official work and got stuck in nowhere as they could not return back.
Meanwhile, a massive protest was conducted by the stranded passengers at the Jogomnaya Ghat area in Dhubri district and the Deputy Commissioner of Dhubri had to rush on the spot and take a stock of the matter. Looking at the problem, the administration has allowed seven boats for emergency purposes to deploy the stuck passengers who arrived in Dhubri on Monday.
Boats that were organized to deploy the passengers to South Salmara Mankachar and Meghalaya will be sent after installing a marine engine.
After the tragic accident at Nimatighat in Jorhat, a ferry carrying 92 passengers submerged into Brahmaputra River due to a collision with another ferry where three passengers died.
According to the sources, in Dhubri more than 200 hundred single-engine boats ply regularly over the Brahmaputra river which was currently banned by the State government.
